November 2020: Zach's Birthday, West Takes a (Self-Inflicted) Fall, 3 Hard Working Brothers, Thanksgiving, Covid...

3 Hardworking Brothers

All Three of my Josh Stevens ES boys earned the Work Ethic award from their class for the Student of the Month Award.  Only one student from each class is selected each month for a different trait and all three of my boys earned it this month.  We were pretty proud!  Here is what each teacher said about these amazing boys.

Ned's classmates chose him because they said he works hard every singe day and always meets his goals. He was our first ST Math graduate and always puts 100% effort into everything he does. I couldn't agree more, Ned sets such an amazing example for others. He always takes thorough notes and never puts in less than 1,000%. He is a #Rockstar!--Mrs. Hinebaugh

Nyle has terrific work ethic! He turns in all his assignments and they are very well done. Nyle works hard every day in class and participates often. Nyle sets goals for himself and achieves them. I've very proud of you, Nyle. You inspire me and your classmates to work hard every day. --Mrs. Lee

West works hard in everything he does. He completes every assignment with 100% effort! He is focused on his goals and works hard to reach them!--Mrs.  Miller

Both Kind and Smart! Nyle shows off his Math Facts level completion certificate and a certificate noticing him for being kind in class.

Ned and West both completed their ST math program already!

West Takes a (Self-Inflicted) Fall

One Sunday as we were getting seated on the couch, preparing to start home-church, West decided to get up to do a flip on the rug that sits atop our Travertine stone floor.  It was very sudden and he landed right on his shoulder.  We all heard a snap and then he started crying...a lot!  I had to take him upstairs to try to calm him down when I noticed his collarbone looked a little funny.  When Zach came up to check on us about 45 minutes later, West was still crying and in a lot of pain.  We decided we'd better take him into a quick-care that could X-Ray him.  Right before taking him in, Zach was able to give him a priesthood blessing.  West stopped crying right after that and was able to be calm.  From that point on, he claims it stopped hurting.  But it wasn't healed...when it was X-Rayed they determined that he had broken his clavicle.  They gave him a sling and said there was nothing else they could do for it.  He would need to refrain from using that arm and bear with the pain for the next 6 weeks at minimum.  They advised giving him ibuprofen or Tylenol for the pain.  The miraculous thing is that he never once needed any pain medication help.  He never once complained of the pain.  He was careful with it, but had no trouble sleeping because of it, ever!  We are so grateful for the priesthood power granted to Zach to bless our family!

Zach's Birthday

We all love Zach so much and this year the kids showered him with love and affection!  They decorated his present with things that he loves and made a bunch of very sweet home made gifts for him.   West drew a special picture of the Las Vegas Wash and Ned fabricated a stand for it out of cardboard.  Nyle sent Zach on a treasure hunt to locate his gift.  And of course we made his favorite foods, particularly chocolate cake!

Gwen created a family flag and determined that our mascot should be the bighorn sheep

I'm trying to replicate the pose in the next picture.

Come Follow Me Program
We have begun having the kids take part in teaching lessons for our home church.  We split it up a bit and give them a few ideas and then let them run with it.  Zach and I will teach one Sunday, and then the kids teach the next Sunday.  I have loved it and they are so much more involved!

Ned's turn to teach.  I think he was having us illustrate what stuck out to us as he read some scriptures to us.

Covid Strikes at Thanksgiving!

Two days before Thanksgiving, I heard Zach coughing.  We had plans to go to Logandale for Thanksgiving and were concerned that this might interfere, unsure of what he might be sick with.  Sure enough, it was Covid and it struck us all!  We were grounded from going anywhere!  He felt feverish on Thanksgiving Day, but I felt fine so I prepared a huge Thanksgiving meal just for our family, with his help.  The next day it started to hit Lincoln and myself.  By Saturday we were taking it a bit easier and Zach went to go get tested for Covid (positive). On Sunday, Lincoln and I spent the whole day in bed-- feeling terribly achy.  Monday, we felt a bit better, but lost our sense of taste and smell.  I think by the end of the next week, Lincoln was all back to normal. Zach and I however, just couldn't shake the malaise feeling.  We just couldn't get back to normal.  All the kids experienced some form of sickness during that time, though for most of them it was just a sore throat.  For the next two months I experienced chest pressure, though not bad enough for me to go to the hospital. My mom finally recommended I take some baby aspirin to thin my blood a bit so it could get oxygenated and fortunately, that did the trick!  Zach still hasn't gained his sense of smell back (it has now been 5 months since we had it) but is trying Vitamin D to hopefully restore it.  It was an annoying illness to be sure, but fortunately, we all came out of it fine.

Zach's sense of smell was so absent he couldn't even smell a pot of onion, celery and carrots when they were raw.
